Japanese Angelica( Aralia elata Seem.) 두릅나무

Form :  an deciduous and broad-leaved bush

Characteristics: The leaves dovetailed each other, hang on the branches in all directions.  They are 5~12 centimeters long and 2~7cm wide.  The color of the surface is darkgreen and that of the backside is gray. The short hairs grow in pile on the stem that have spread vein of a leaf. The sawteeth in various size are attached on the edge of the leaves. The fruits are rounded, 3-millimeter-sized in diameter and has white color. You can see the very sharp splinters on the entire tree. This plant is 3~4 meters high. Aralia Elata is the native of Korea. In Korea, it grows in a mountain or field, full of crags. It grows wild in some countries such as Japan, China and Russia.

Where can find it at Dongbaekdongsan?

You can find them on the border of the forest or a stroll path that is given lots of sunlight.

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved tendril (vine) shrub

Characteristc : The leaf is in opposite, thick, length 4~8cm, width 2.5~3.5cm, oval shape or wide oval shape, sharp head rounded leaf-base. brown scale hair is dense , edge is flat or curved in wave shape. The flower is bloomed in October~December, leaf axil, go down. The fruit is drupe, long oval shape, has long red-brown scale hair, ripen in next year April~May in red. The stem is climbing habit, young branch has brown scale hair, branches out long but don’t coiled. The length is 3m. Its origin is Korea

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Dongbaekdongsan, can be found in forest’s brim and in trail with light. It looks like Longleaf Elaeagnus but leaf is more thin

Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia Jacq.) 참느릅나무

Form : Deciduous leaves and a tall tree

Characteristic: Leaves are cross each other. It is thick and reversed-oval or oval or long oval or lanceolate. its length is 3~5centimeters. Hair isn’t in two sides and it has shine on the surface. A nut is a thin film of peel shape and winged key-fruit . A nut is oval and its length 8~11millimeters. A nut don’t have hair and grows ripe in October. A bisexual and a unisexual flower bloom in September. Flower’s color is yellowish brown a stamen is 4~5 and anther is purplish-yellow. A tree’s height is 10meters. Trunk stand erect. Hair is on the twig. The bark of a tree is red brown and thick. Also, the barks splits to pieces. The place of origin is Korea. And, it is distributed in Japan and China.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : It makes a community because of rainfall in pastureland in Dongbaekdongsan. Also, it can be seen in  ‘Meonmulkkak‘ surrounding wetland and forest edge.

Japanese Cinnamon (Cinnamomum japonicum Sieb.) 생달나무

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved arboreous tree

Characteristic : Leaf is alternate or opposite, coriaceous, fragrance in cutting, length of 6-15㎝, width of 2-5㎝, narrow ovalness or long elliptical, pointed and round end, sharp-bottom or a little round-bottom, plain margin, no hairs on both sides, glossy on surface, white backside. Fruit is 1.2cm diameter, elliptical, purplish black, ripened in November-December, and has 3-5㎝ fruit stalk, and red sarcocarp. Flower is bisexual, bloomed in June-July, light yellow. It is about 15m high. The barks are black and the hairless twigs are green with lenticel. The old tree can strip a bark off a tree, its fragrance like cinnamon. The roots are developed the side root. Its origin is Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Dongbaekdongsan, mostly can be found in edge of forest and inside of forest. The leaf is long and vein is trident, surface is glossy.

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved arboreous tree

Characteristic : The leaf is alternate phyllotaxis with the long oval shape or lanceolate and has the length of 7-10cm and width of 2-4cm for dull head acute, and the edge is flat and the surface is thick green without hair but glossy, and the backside is green with dense fine hair. The fruit is berry in ball shape with the diameter of 1cm that it ripe in red on 7-8. The flower is dioecious. The height reaches 15m with the flat bark in soft black purple in round shape and the people in the island call it marine tree for it has become like the tree bark. The twig is gray color and has narrow lenticel without any hair. Its origin is Korea, and and the plant is distributed in China and Japan, and it grows in the souhern island region of Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan: In Dongbaekdongsan, inside the forest trails can be found in the vicinity, mostly diameter at breast height is thin.  The edge is flat and the surface hasn’t hair but glossy, and the backside has dense fine hair.

Tricuspid Cudrania (Cudrania tricuspidata) 꾸지뽕나무

Form : Deciduous broadleaf small tree

Characteristic : Leaf is dislocated. Some are divided into two~three parts and the other are has smooth edgh and egg-shaped. The length is 6~10cm and the width is 3~6cm. Surface has hairs and the back of leaf has small, thin hairs. The fruit is around-shaped, its diameter is 2.5cm. It is juicy and grow up as red in September~October. The fruit is sweat and eatable. The flower blooms in May~June. The stem comes off grayish brown and the branch has thorn modified branch is 0.5~3.5cm long. A twig has hairs. The lenticel is developed on branch and the bark of tree is yellowish gray. The home is Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan:  In Dongbackdongsan, it is easily find at forest’s edge, grazing land. It has thick thorn on branch and has small hairs in leaf. The edge of leaf is smooth.

Sawtooth Oak (Quercus acutissima Carruth) 상수리나무

Form :  Deciduousbroad leaves and a tall tree

Characteristic : A leaf is long oval. Leaf’s length is 10~20centimeters. It has narrow leaves like needle and a sharp saw tooth with pointed tips. Hair isn’t on the surface. Leaf is glossy. It has short hair the back of a leaf. And a petiole is 1~3centimeters and doesn’t have fur. A leaf is similar to a chest nut tree but they are distinguished. Because a petal’s tip of Sawtooth Oak is seen white. A nut grows ripe next year and peel covering a nut is reflexed. A nut is all round and 2centimeters in diameter. A nut is brown tinged with black. A female flower and a male flower bloom in one tree. A trunk’s height is 20~25meters. The root trunk rises up and make big arborescence. The bark of a tree is dark gray and split. Hair is on the twig but it disappeared as it grows. A straight root is developed.

 Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan: It can be seen in some area of pastureland, a walk entrance and from a walk entrance toward forest little inside in Dongbaekdongsan.

Wild Smilax, China Root (Smilax china L.) 청미래덩굴

Form: Deciduous broadleaf vine shrub

Characteristic : Length of leaf is 3~12cm, width is 2~10cm. It is thick, round shape or wide oval shape. And suddenly tip point berry is round. And diameter is about 1cm. It ripes red at September to October and it is called Mangeh. At it’s joint, the vain bends and grows longer and it has prickle like hook. Root grows thick and long. It spread around and has irregularly bending, fibril sprout sparsely. In addition, It is used for medicinal purposes. Young leaves and berry is used for food. The home is Korea, China and Japan. Distribution is middle part of south  Seoul. It grows spontaneously under the altitude 1,600m of sunny place.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Dongbackdongsan, It is easily find at forest’s edge, grazing land. In forest, it can be find at intervals. The leaf is thick and round shape.

Form :  evergreen broad-leaved shrub

 

Characteristics : The leaf sprouts crossed and lanceolate, which shape is narrow and tapering to a point at each end. The length is 2.5~8cm, and the width is 1.2~3.5cm. The a kind of berry fruit is globular shape, ripen in May to June. It has poison. This dioecism white flowers have strong scent and grow densely on the tip of the branches. The native habitat is Korea and Japan, also dispersed in Korea and Japan.

 

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :  It can be rarely seen in the edge of the forest and the pasture where the rock blocks are heaped in Dongbaekdongsan.

Shiny Xylosma(Xylosma congestum) 산유자나무

Form :  evergreen broad-leaved shrub 

Characteristics :  The leaf sprouts crossed. It has egg shaped or long oval with sharp point. (sometimes dull point) The leaf of little tree has no hair and it has dense sawtooth. The length is 4~8cm, the width is 3~5cm. T e rounded fruit ,  a kind of berry, which diameter is 5mm ripen to black in November with 2~3 seeds. The flowers hang crosse on the long a flower stalk, with many flower which have a peduncle. This dioecism off-white flowers blossom in August to September, which diameter is 2.5mm with short peduncles. Small stalks have short branches of which the end is thorn. The branch is reddish brown color and when it is little, it has a peduncle as well as hairs. Its native habitat is Korea. It reseeds below altitude 700m on the seashore in Jeollanam-do and Jeju-do, rarely in forest valley. It also spreads in Japan, Taiwan, India and Philippines.

 

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :  It can be seen in the way from the side ‘Eden Retreat Center’ entrancede of the forest to the pasture around or the trail.
