Sericeous Newlitse (참식나무)

Form : evergreen broad leaved shrub

Characteristic : Leaves are dislocated , thick, long and oval shaped .  The edges are smooth and under the leaves are white. Brown hairs grow and the fruits are round shaped. Stems grows straight and the surface of the tree is dark-gray. Small branches are green and the hairs decrease as they grow.

Where you can see at Dongbaekdongsan : It can be observed near edge of the forest.

Dorcus titanus castanicolor 넓적사슴벌레

Form : The length of female is 20~33mm and male is 20~53mm. It is wide and is black. The jaws are really big and each sides are almost parallel.

Characteristic : It hides under the surface of trees during days and becomes active at night

이삭사초(Carex dimorpholepis Steud. 사초과)

Form : Perennial herbage

Characteristics : Height is 50~60cm high. Stems grow up together and they are strong. Leaves on the root don’t have a  sheath and the leaves on the stems are flat. Width is of it is 5~7mm and flowers bloom May to June.  Scale pieces of he female flowers are oval shaped and have a brown line. Stigma comes out in 2 branches and fruits are achene.

Symplocos coreana(H.Lev.)Ohwi(섬노린재나무)

Form: a decideous and broad-leaved bush

Characteristics: Leaves are out of line. The leaves are long, wide and egg-shaped. The bottom of the leaves are broad and wedge-shaped. They have sawteeth on the edges. On the back, there are hairs on the veins. Fruits are egg-shaped and grow ripe in September, changing its color from navy-blue to dark brown. White flowers blossom around May and June. Branches are brown and small branches don’t have hair. Skin of trees fall in light pieces. These trees grow in Jeju and are also distributed in Japan.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Dongbaekdongsan, they can be observed around the entrance which gets a lot of sunlight. They can be also be seen at the ‘Meonmulkkak’ area.

맹꽁이 (Boreal Digging Frog) Kaloula borealis 맹꽁이과

Characteristics : Its body is round shaped and mouth is small and short. It is yellow and light blue on the back, and it has black stripe on the yellow stomach.


Ecology : Except during the spawning season, it mostly lives on land. It hides between the rocks or under the ground during the day and gets active in the night. Like other frogs, it lures the female by sound. It comes up on the ground to mate and spawn in the rainy season. Its eggs hatch in 28~30 hours and finish metamorphosis when they are about 30 days old. Boreal Digging Frogs goes through metamorphosis faster than other frogs since they spawn in the pond or puddle made in the rainy season.


Where you can see this specie at Dongbaekdongsan : You can easily hear them crying in the night after a rain in summer. Especially it can be seen in surrounding swamp in the rainy season more easily than in Munmulggak which has rather stable water level.

Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc(때죽나무)

Form : deciduous broadleaf small forest tree
Characteristic : The leaves are alternate and egg-shaped or oval. Their length is 2~8cm, width is 2~4cm and they have no hair on them, and are saw-toothed. The fruits are oval. They bear blue fruit from July after the flowers are gone. The fruits’ length is about 1.2~1.4 cm and they shapes like a bell. They grow ripe in September and gets grey-white. The flowers are genomonecious, 1.2~1.4cm in diameter, white and opens in May to June. Branches have star-shaped hairs but then disappear. Branches become brown  when their epidermis is taken off, and the part of the small branches are yellow-green. Stem is dark brown and it has vertical stripes. The tree has a main tree and lateral roots. The home of this tree is Korea, and it is distributed in Japan and China.

 Feature: The scalelike fur is produced on the short and thick root,and the leaves live in group . The oval shaped leaves divide into two. There are sharp fractions on the back of leaves and it gets together.The small leaves are pinnacle like leaves and has sawtooth on the edge of leaves. Because the leaves are red, we call them ‘홍지네 고사리’ in Korean. It lives in shade of  forests

Mycena chlorophos 받침애주름버섯

Features : It grows on the Bamboo, Palm tree and other dry trees and fallen branches from summer to fall. The head of the mushroom is round at first and become flat. The surface of the head has a big viscosity because it is covered with Gellatin. It is light gray and the edge of it is white. When it gets wet, some strings appear. The wrinkle of it is white at first and it turns gray.

Russula sanguinea (Bull.) Fr(혈색무당버섯)

Time and place of occurrence : generated in autumn, flocking on the sand in the pine woods and having a symbiotic relationship with plants.


Features : The diameter of its cap is 4~10cm, and cap is bell-shaped. They are sticky when wet and the edge is flat and it has stripes. The flesh are white and tastes hot but smells nothing. The color changes white into cream. The length of the sack is 3 ~ 7cm, and thickness is 0.9 ~ 3cm. The size of spores is 7~8×6~7μm and it’s nearly spherical and has many thorn on the surface.

Amanita vaginata var. fulva (Schaeff.) Gill (고동색 우산버섯)

Time and place of occurrence : generated in summer ~ autumn, scattered among the woods.


Features : Diameter of its cap is 4 ~ 10cm , and it’s bell-shaped. The surface is reddish brown and the middle part of the surface is little black. Also its surface is sticky when it is moist. The flesh is white and has stripes on the edge. Stem length is 7 ~ 15cm and width is 1 ~ 1.5cm. It has white powdered shaped piece of scaly.  And the size of spores is 12~14μm and shape is spherical.
