Black paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone atrocaudata) 삼광조

Characteristics : The whole length of the body, male is 45cm and female is 18cm. The color of male’s head and breast is glossy black. Eye edges and a beak is lustrous purple and the belly is white. Male’s long tail is black. The upside of the female’s body is brown and it’s tail is much smaller than male’s.

Ecology : It refers a thickly-wooded valley, deciduous broad-leaved forest, mixed forest, broad-leaved forest. It nests at Y-shaped narrow branch and mainly eat the insect species.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : It comes to Jeju, Korea in summer. It propagate in Gotjawal, deciduous broadleaf forest zone, the valley with evergreen broad-leaved trees and thickly-wooded forest. In Camellia Hill‘s forest, we can often hear the song of it like ‘Hiyo, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi’, and if we concentrate our sight on it’s song can see an imago.

Japanese Bush Warbler (Cettia diphone) 휘파람새

Characteristics  : The whole size is about 14~16cm. The male one is larger than the female one, but the color of the body has no differences. The upper body is tinged with color of Olive. The eyebrow line is gray-white with not that clear color. The forehead is slightly tinged with the yellow-brown and pale gray from the bottom of the joint. The down tail covert is pale yellow-brown.

Ecology : Living in the shrubbery and the bushes and rarely observed because moving through the shrub and bushes. During the reproductive season they are easily observed because they speak whistle like sound “Ho,hohokkyekyo”. They don’t make groups and live alone. Also, they enjoy eating insects but observed eating persimmon near the city in the winter.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : They are resident birds in Jeju island and populate until the top of the mountain Halla. We can easily hear their call in the summer seasons. Also in Camellia hill we can hear their voices in evrywhere.

Dusky Thrush (turdus naumanni) 개똥지빠귀

Characteristics : The length of the body is about 23cm. From head to tail, the upside of body is dark brown. The eyebrow line is clear yellowish white. The color of beneath it’s chin and neck is white, and black spots are on lower neck and the flank. The center of the belly is white and the feathers are dark brown. The color of female’s wing is so light red that there is no difference between the wings and the back.

Ecology : It lives in group at mountains and forest, farmland and open land etc, but sometimes it comes to a residential street to eat berry in a house garden. It lives in the insect species, seed plants and berries.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : It commonly passes the winter at Korea and we can observe it to live in group at farmland, meadow and like places of the middle mountains in winter or movement of spring and autumn. In 동백동산, we can observe it to sit on a branch at pastureland or to search for food on the ground mostly in winter.

Pale Thrush (Turdus pallidus) 흰배지빠귀

Characteristics : The whole length of its body is 23cm or so. Its head is dark gray and back is light brown. Female thrush’s head seems faintly gray. It chest and side are dark brown, stomach is white. When it flies, we can see white spots at the outside tail-feather.

Ecology : It lives in the forest, it raises fallen leaves and usually eats earthworm. In Winter, it eats fruits fallen on the ground. In breeding season, it chirps ‘Koro, Koro, Koron, Koron’.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Korea, it usually comes as a summer migratory bird but in Jeju, it is a resident bird and lives in Gotjawal and a velly which develops fallen leave-broadleaf forest and evergreen-broadleaf forest. In winter, we can ordinarily see it that finds the preys in orchards which locate near house.  In Cemellia garden, we can sometimes see it which finds the preys in the broadwalk and hear chirping in summer.

Scaly ThrusWhite’s Thrush (Tarsiger cyanurus) 호랑지빠귀

Characteristics : The whole body’s length is about 29cm. A upper side of body is yellowish brown and the end of feathers has black stripes. The breast and belly are white and seem to have black spots on a white ground because of the black end of feathers. When it flies, we can watch white stripes under wings. A bill is brown and legs are pink.

Ecology : It lives in a thickly-wooded forest. It makes a nest shaped a rice bowl on a tree using moss and vines, etc. It eats insects, spiders, earthworms and so on. At dawn in the summer, it sings ‘Hee Ee, Ho Oo’ like a thin sound of a flute, but in a thickly-wooded forest, it sometimes sing in the daytime.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : It usually comes as a summer migratory bird, but it is a resident bird in Jeju. In the summer, it usually live in a forest, but it wanders in around a dwelling house in the winter. In Camellia hill, it is sometimes observed in around a narrow path in the summer and we can sometimes hear the call of it in a forest.

Characteristics : The whole body’s length is about 14cm. Male and female have different length. Male is blue from a head to a tail, and a side under a body is white. A line of eyebrows is white and a fore side of eyes to a back side of that. Right and left sides are bright orange. Female is light brown on the whole, but a tail is light blue.

Ecology : Generally it lives independently in a farmland, park, and hill on a plain. It eats insects or seeds.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Jeju, it comes as a winter migratory bird. It usually lives in a shrub or a bush. In Camellia hill, usually in the winter, we can sometimes observe it singing ‘Hick, hick’ in a bush and it sometimes sits on a branch or ground.

Bull-headed Shrike (Lanius bucephalus) 때까치

Characteristics : The whole length of its body is  20cm or so. Its head and side are brown, the male bird’s line around eyes is black and female’s is reddish brown. There are spots on the wings, they are seen clearly when it flies. The female has clear scale patterns, the male has scale patterns but it is difficult to distinguish them. Its beak is black and sharp like a bird of prey.

Ecology : It likes open place such as open area, farmland, shrubbery which is overgrown with bushes etc. It prey on the insect species, amphibian, reptile etc. and it has a nature that put its prey in a thorn or sharp branch. It lives alone rather than in groups.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Jeju, It is a resident bird and is watched relatively common. In Camellia garden, we can watch that it cries ‘kikikikikiki’ in a loud voice on the shrub and flying birds in pasture.

Brown-eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) 직박구리

Characteristics : The whole size is about 28cm. The head and back is tinged with blue gray. There are brown spot near the backward of the eye and the wing is brownish gray. The bottom of the bill, throat and the neck is gray and the breast is blue gray. In the abdomen of its body has white spot and its number go higher going to the bottom side.

Ecology : They live near the various spots near the village, farm and forests. They eat insects during the summer and eat tree fruit during the winter. They especially like Japanese Persimmon. They build their nests on the branch of which the height is about the humans.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : They are resident birds in Jeju island and usually seen. They also can be observed near the forests and paster in Camellia hill. We can see there sound “찌익 찌익” in every spot of Camellia hill.

Barn Swallow (Hirundo daurica) 제비

Characteristics : The whole size is about 18cm. The upper side is dark green with shining. The forehead and gullet is redish brow and there is a black line in the bottom side of the gullet. The abdomen is a thin yellow but looked as white. The outside tail feather is longer than the inside one, projecting to the flight feathers. The male one has longer tail feather than the female one has.

Ecology : Mainly, they live near the village, and build the bowl like nests on the bottom of the eaves using the soil and straw. Main diet is insects and they hunt while flying.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan: They come to our nation in summer. In Jeju, they are observed from spring to winter and we can see them, lining on the electric wire and the street trees before leaving for the south after reproduction, In camellia hills, they are seen flying in the sky of the forests and the pasture.
