Form : evergreen broad leaved shrub

Characteristic : Leaves are dislocated , thick, long and oval shaped .  The edges are smooth and under the leaves are white. Brown hairs grow and the fruits are round shaped. Stems grows straight and the surface of the tree is dark-gray. Small branches are green and the hairs decrease as they grow.

Where you can see at Dongbaekdongsan : It can be observed near edge of the forest.

콩짜개덩굴 Lemmaphyllum microphyllum presl

Characteristic : The rhizome is thin and long and crawls to the side with sparse leaves. The scale is brown and membranous. The base is circular but it gets narrow in the upper side.  It is simple leaf. The trophophyll is circular or oval, the tip is round and dull on the edge and spreads to the both side of the rhizome. Petiole has round tip and narrow bottom. Midrib is embossed and has sori on the both side. It usually grows near the beach and on the rock or old tree.

Where can you see this plant in Dongbaekdongsan?

In the forest on the tree skin where they don’t get much sunlight.

Chinese Jasmine(마삭줄) Trachelospermum asiaticum var.intermedium Makai 협죽도과

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved tendril (vine) shrub

Characteristic :Leaves face each other and they are oval. The surface of it is dark green and the edge is simple.  Fruits ripe ins September and flowers bloom in May~June. The flowers change their color from white to brown. Branches are dark brown and have no hair. Roots come out from its stem  and stick to other things. It grows in all over the Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :It can be seen inside and the edge of the ‘Dongbaekdongsan’ forest. Especially we can see their flowers at May around ‘Meonmulkkak’.

자금우 (Marberry) Ardisia japonica Blume

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved small shrub

Characteristic : Leaves are oval or egg-shaped, dark green and shiny. The costa on the back of the leaf is reddish purple. The fruit looks like a pressed ball or rugby ball and grows mature and become red in September and it’s still there when they bloom flowers the next year. The flower is hermaphrodite and blooms in June. The stem crawls to the side as it grow and it has glandular hair only on the tip of the young branch. Its origin country is Korea and also grows in Japan, China, and Taiwan.

Where in Dongbaekdongsan can you see this plant?

: It’s easily seen near the trail, edge and inside of the forest, and also near the swamp.

Form: a decideous and broad-leaved bush

Characteristics: Leaves are out of line. The leaves are long, wide and egg-shaped. The bottom of the leaves are broad and wedge-shaped. They have sawteeth on the edges. On the back, there are hairs on the veins. Fruits are egg-shaped and grow ripe in September, changing its color from navy-blue to dark brown. White flowers blossom around May and June. Branches are brown and small branches don’t have hair. Skin of trees fall in light pieces. These trees grow in Jeju and are also distributed in Japan.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : In Dongbaekdongsan, they can be observed around the entrance which gets a lot of sunlight. They can be also be seen at the ‘Meonmulkkak’ area.

Styrax japonicus Siebold & Zucc(때죽나무)

Form : deciduous broadleaf small forest tree
Characteristic : The leaves are alternate and egg-shaped or oval. Their length is 2~8cm, width is 2~4cm and they have no hair on them, and are saw-toothed. The fruits are oval. They bear blue fruit from July after the flowers are gone. The fruits’ length is about 1.2~1.4 cm and they shapes like a bell. They grow ripe in September and gets grey-white. The flowers are genomonecious, 1.2~1.4cm in diameter, white and opens in May to June. Branches have star-shaped hairs but then disappear. Branches become brown  when their epidermis is taken off, and the part of the small branches are yellow-green. Stem is dark brown and it has vertical stripes. The tree has a main tree and lateral roots. The home of this tree is Korea, and it is distributed in Japan and China.

Characteristics : It is 3m long and they are brown and gray bark the Virgin has a sprig. It has a pointed oval shaped leaves, or with a long oval-shaped. In front of the leaf has a short hairs. It is mainly distributed in Jeju Island and the southern islands. Flowers are bisexual which blossoms in August and it is attached on the axilla. Fruits ripe in October with purple color and they are round shaped.

Characteristic : It grows in the woods below mountainside. It has strong hardy and shade tolerance. The height is about 3m and its wide leaves are round or upset egg shaped which have saw tooth at its edge. The flowers are white and it begins to blossom in June at the edge of the branch with leaves.

Characteristic : Eurya japonica is usually 2~3m tall. The leaves are ovoid, and the front of  leaves polished.  The edge of the leaf  is sow-toothed. The flowers are white and they have unique scent. The flowers structure of  this tree is similar to the flowers structure of Camellia  flowers.

Machilus japonica Siebold & Zucc. 센달나무

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved shrub
Characteristic : The leaves are out of line and spear-shaped or reversed-spear-shaped. The height is 8~20cm and the width is 2~4cm. The surface of the leaf is blue-green and the back side is white-green. It has no hair on both sides and has no teeth. Its feather-shaped vein on the back side is 12 pairs. The fruit is conglobation and its diameter is 1cm. It is black-green and ripens in september of the next year. The blossom is androgyne and hung on conical catkin. It is light yellow-green and comes into flower in May. The height of the stem reaches 10m. The small branches are gray-green and has no hair. Place of origin is Korea. It also reseeds in Japan or south islands like Geoje island and Jeju island.


Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :
In Dongbaekdongsan, it can be seen in the inside of the forest or around the esplanade. The tall one is not seen but it can be usually seen like frutex. The leaf is lond and thin. The edge of it is cymoid. The vein of the middle is clear.
