Jeju Salamander (Hynobius quelpartensis) 제주도롱뇽

Characteristics : There are many dark brown spots on its brown body. Especially spots from the back of its eyes to its back are clear. Small black dots on the head and the end of tail are very dense. The size of adult male is about 6cm, and female is 6.3cm.

 

Ecology : It’s hardly seen around water except during egg-laying. It hides itself under a rock or an withered tree in the day, but at night it moves around seeking for food. It lays its eggs in March or April, but if the weather is warm, it does even in January or February. Its banana-shaped egg-sac is attached on the bottom of a rock or fallen leaves. Each egg-sac has 30~70 eggs inside. In the larval stage when it only lives in water, it respires through its gill. When it grows to be an adult, the gill atrophies.

 

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : At ponds, wetlands, under rotten trees or a wet rock. You can see plenty of spawns at ‘Meonmulkkak’ and other wetlands around it in spring.

Japanese Angelica( Aralia elata Seem.) 두릅나무

Form :  an deciduous and broad-leaved bush

Characteristics: The leaves dovetailed each other, hang on the branches in all directions.  They are 5~12 centimeters long and 2~7cm wide.  The color of the surface is darkgreen and that of the backside is gray. The short hairs grow in pile on the stem that have spread vein of a leaf. The sawteeth in various size are attached on the edge of the leaves. The fruits are rounded, 3-millimeter-sized in diameter and has white color. You can see the very sharp splinters on the entire tree. This plant is 3~4 meters high. Aralia Elata is the native of Korea. In Korea, it grows in a mountain or field, full of crags. It grows wild in some countries such as Japan, China and Russia.

You can find them on the border of the forest or a stroll path that is given lots of sunlight.

Harmonia axyridis 무당벌레

Form: The length of the body is 5~8mm. The back pattern is difficult to explain because it changes frequently. For normal Harmonia axyridis , the color of the pattern is orange or scarlet. The sides of the front chest is round and white while the center is black.  

Other characters: Harmonia axyridis is natural enemy to aphids. So they are called “living agricultural pesticides”. The female lay eggs on the aphids. In 2~3 weeks, the larva becomes the imago. During Autumn, imagos gather in the decided place. Then they get through winter in group. Harmonia axyridis lives in Korea, China, Siberia and so on.

Laccotrephes japonensis Scott 장구애비

Form :  The body lenghth is about 40~45mm. The body length is  3 time width, the body color is the grayish brown or dark brown. The body shape  is  ellipse and its  front  paranotal lobe is wider than a width of the head. The feelers are very small and they are in 3 joint, but they are hide under the compound eyes , is not visible from above. To the thigh there is projection with a prinkle shape. To end of the stomach there is an air distance of the thinly long cylinder shape body length and is similar.  There are named water scorpion because dabble above the water seems  simillar to the shpae of playing janggu during  singing.

Other characters :  They prefer clear water than the bilge with the leaves or branches under that. When breathing, it comes up nearly to the surface of the water and they puts out the respiratory organ.  In the daytime, they hide under the  water plant or the leaves under the water and at night they seeks the food and they catches  the water bettles  or the small fishs and suck their  body fluids with the front legs which are look like sickle. They lay eggs in the scale moss.  In the country, they live in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, India and the island of java

Agapanthia pilicornis 남색초원하늘소

Form: The length of the body is 11~17mm. The body is blue navy and gloss. There are lots of black long hairs on the back. The feelers are very long. The third~fifth joint is almost red and the other joints are light gray (only bottom).  

Other characters: The imago appears May ~ July. You can see this insects on the chrysanthemum including “Daisy Fleabane”. They eat the stem or leaves of them. Agapanthia pilicornis lives in Korea, China, Siberia and so on.

Acrothinium gaschkevitchii 주홍꼽추잎벌레

Form: The length is 6~8mm. The back is high like hunchback. The front chest, elytron and the thigh’s joint is gloss green and the head is black. There is scarlet vertical line on the elytron.

Other characters: They inhabit fields or farm. They appear in May ~ August. They get through the “complete transformation”. The imago eat leaves like that of a grapevine and the caterpillar eat the roots.

Gerris elongatus 왕소금쟁이

Form :  The body length of  a male is 19~26mm and females are 21~26mm. The body color is black or the brown. They are the biggest  water strider  in Korea. The body is covered with soft white far and for the adult, it changes to isabella gradually. The crown of the head’s v shape,  the center of the  front chest ‘s  vertical stripe in front pieces and the outer margin of the back pieces are light brown. The back edges in head, front chest,  end of the stomach joint are colored yellow. The lower part of the bodys are black and covered with thin and  gray color. Feeler of the males are 1/2 of the body length and the females are shorter than that. The first joints are the longest of the all and the third  joints are shortest of the all. The mouth end goes over the lower part joint of the front leg.  the lower part of the front wing are dark color,  wing of pulse are black. The lower part of the legs are light black. The legs are thin and long.

Other characters :  they suck  food walking above the water.

Apis mellifera Linne 양봉꿀벌

Form: THe length is about 12mm. The feelers and the edge of ‘head shield’ of Queen bees are yellow brown. This point let us distribute the queen bees and the working bees. The male is bigger than the working bee and the compound eyes stick each other. There are lots of brown-gray-yellow hairs on the working bee’s body. The first and second abdominal segment is reddish brown and the others are black brown. The wing is clear but little yellow and the nerve is black brown. 

Other characters: Apis mellifera Linne is common farming bee.

Ischnura asiatica 아시아실잠자리

Form: The length of stomach is 20~24mm and that of back wings is 12~19mm. The body color of the male is pistachio. There is a black stripe on the front chest and the back. The color of the nineth abdominal segment is light blue. There is round and black pattern on the top of the male’s eyes. There are two forms of the female Ischnura asiatica. One has the pistachio color like male and the other do red.  

Other characters: Ischnura asiatica is one of the most common dragonflies. The larva inhabit pond or reservoir. From May to September, especially in Summer, the imagos appear. Ischnura asiatica couple fly together while mating, near the surface, and then lay eggs on the leaves of plant in the pond. During breading, the male hold the female’s front chest by his tale’s adnexitis to stand upright.

Hygia (Colpura) lativentris (Motschulsky) 떼허리노린재

Form : The body length is 8.3~11.5mm. From the head to the stomach are black or brown. Luster is not but a yellow noil in the surface. The feelers wears the  brown. The front chest’s front part has horizontally shallow and wide  groove and it has brown spot pattern. Membranaceous is black and brown and small. The stomach joint is expanded widely. The adult insect of the male has bump look like the nipple shape of  couple

Other characters :  eggs,  larva, adult insect are unequipped transformation.
