Meimuna opalifera (Walker) 애매미

Form: The length of the body is 30mm and that of the wing to the wing is  45mm. The body is black brown and they have a light green patterns on  them. The front wing is long.

 Other characters: The imago appears from July to October. Their crying is very strange. They  live in about 400m high mountains. They don’t choose a special tree but  usually live in broad-leaved tree.

Cryptotympana dubia (Haupt) 말매미

Form: The length of the wing to the wing is 65mm so they are the biggest  Cicadidae in Korea. The body is black and sheeny. 

Other characters: The imago appears from June to September. They usually live in fields or  trees on the low mountain. In Korea, most of them live in Jeju.

Machilus japonica Siebold & Zucc. 센달나무

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved shrub
Characteristic : The leaves are out of line and spear-shaped or reversed-spear-shaped. The height is 8~20cm and the width is 2~4cm. The surface of the leaf is blue-green and the back side is white-green. It has no hair on both sides and has no teeth. Its feather-shaped vein on the back side is 12 pairs. The fruit is conglobation and its diameter is 1cm. It is black-green and ripens in september of the next year. The blossom is androgyne and hung on conical catkin. It is light yellow-green and comes into flower in May. The height of the stem reaches 10m. The small branches are gray-green and has no hair. Place of origin is Korea. It also reseeds in Japan or south islands like Geoje island and Jeju island.


Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :
In Dongbaekdongsan, it can be seen in the inside of the forest or around the esplanade. The tall one is not seen but it can be usually seen like frutex. The leaf is lond and thin. The edge of it is cymoid. The vein of the middle is clear.

Machilus thunbergii S. et Z. 후박나무

Form : evergreen broad leaved shrub
Characteristic : The leaves are out of line but, look like join together gathering on the edge of the branches. The leaf has a bilateral symmetry vein, centered around the principal axis and is obovate-oval shape. Its height is 7~15cm and the width is 3~7cm. It lengthens like a tail and is gradually sharper. It doesn’t have the teeth and hair. The bud that grows in spring is colored red like fall foliage. The fruit is bacca and ripens in purple-black in July to september of the next year. Its diameter is 1.4cm and round. The blossom forms conical catkin which has no hair on May to June when a new leaf comes. It comes out between a footstalk and a stem. The bark is greenish brown but, the old tree’s bark chips off like squamas and appears light gray spots. The young one is green, a little red, and has oval skin bud as it grows. The tap root is unusual than brace root. Place of origin is Korea but also distributes in China, Japan, and the Philippines

 In Donbaekdongsan, they can be observes around the entrance of  Retreat center of Eden  or on the esplanade to go the pastures.

Kadsura japonica Dunal(Japanese Kadsura) 남오미자

Characteristic :

The leaf sprouts crossed and has gloss. It is widen or long egg-shaped, oval spear shape. Its length is 5~10cm, the width is about 3~5cm. The leaf has sparse sawtooth like small tooth. There are no hairs both sides of the leaves. The back side of the leaf has small spot that has the color purple inclining to red. The red fruits which diameter is 2~3cm ripen in September to October. The heart shaped seed has lemon yellow color and the length is 3mm.  The flower is dioecism, rarely monoecism. Its stem’s length is 3m, the diameter is 1.5cm. Old stems colored brown , even thick one attains 2cm, split vertically and peel. Its native habitat is Korea. On Mt.Halla in Jeju, it grows up to altitude 1000m, and the other southern sea region, it reseeds below altitude 100m. It also spreads in Japan, China and Taiwan.

It can be commonly seen in the sunlight trail near by entrance of forest, rarely seen small ones inside the forest.

Akebia quinata Decne.(Five-leaf Akebia) 으름덩굴

Form : Deciduous broad-leaved tendril (vine) shrub
Characteristic :

The leaf sprout crossed in new branch and all sprout at once in old branch with palm shaped and overlapped. It sprouts with gathered 5~6, and the length is 3~6cm. It has no hair. Its shape is oval or egg-shaped with plain edge. The fruit is length 6~10cm, long oval in shape. It is ripen in October , turned into purplish brown. The peel of this fruit is thick and edible. This monoecism flowers blossom in April to May. The length of vine is about 5m , and the branch ,which colored brown, has no hair. The long and fat root spreads nearby the earth’s surface. Its native habitat is Korea. It reseeds in the fields and mountains altitude 50~1,300m in the south of Hwang-Hae Do. It also grows in Japan and China

Stauntonia hexaphylla (Thunb.) Decne(Japnese Staunton Vine) 멀꿀

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved tendril (vine) shrub

Characteristic :

leaves sprout crossed out overlapping a hand leaf. 5~7 small leaves and an egg shaped or oval, length is 6~7cm and width is 2.5~4cm. Fruits are an egg shaped or oval, 5~10cm of length and ripen to red-purple in October and the flesh is yellow and tastes better than Five-leaf Akebia. Seed is the oval or egg-shaped oval, a little flat and black with 6~10mm long. The flower  bloom from May to June is monoecism and yellowish white. Stem length is 15m degree and 6cm in diameter around the stem grows. perennial stems are hairless and green. Root grows close to the surface. Origin is Korea. It is found in Japan and Taiwan, the subtropics of southern of china. It grows in 700m below sea level islands.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :

it can be seen in  ‘Meonmulkkak‘ surrounding wetland and forest edge. The leaves of an oval are thick and smooth the edges.

Ficus erecta var. sieboldii King 좁은잎천선과나무

Form : Deciduous leaves and a tall tree

Characteristic:

Leaf tip becomes more pointed, slightly longer end. Underneath the leaves are pointed or slightly indented in the middle image like the upper part of the heart. The length is about 3.5cm~20cm and edge is rather plain. Buds are serrated and on both sides of the hair is rarely but a few on the front. A vein of leaf is clearly pretruding and the length of petiole is about 1~3cm. Flower is dioecism and blooms from May to June. Ripe puplish black  fruit from September to October.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan :

 It is found at forest’s edge and grazing land.

Quercus salicina Blume 참가시나무

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved arboreous tree

Characteristic

The needle shaped leaf is thin, long and the edge is sharp. Also its lower part is a bit balgg from the middle. The fruit is nut and its shape is oval or wide oval the length is 18mm, it has fine hairs at the points. It ripes brown in October. Both sexes flowers bloom at one tree and the height of the trunk reaches 10m. The small branches have hair first but it disappears gradually. Then nabitat is Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan  :

 In Dongbaekdongsan, it can be commonly seen in the forest or edge of the forest and pastnres. It can be misunderstood  Ring-cupped Oak since its leaf shape or the bark of a tree is similar to Ring-cupped Oak . But its leaf is smaller and has teeth at whole edge. Also it is often seen in the middle of the forest.

Quercus glauca Thunb.(Ring-cupped Oak ) 종가시나무

Form : Evergreen broad-leaved arboreous tree

Characteristic

The leaf has no hair and pointed edge. The length is between 5~14cm and the width is between 3~9cm. The front side of the leaf is green and the back side is light green.The  diameter of the hemisphere-shaped fruit which has fire or six concentric circle layers is between 6~9mm.The egg shaped or oval shaped nut ripens in October to November. Both sexes flowers blossom at one stump in April to May, and stem grows straightly form round shape.The bark is greenish grey, the branch has no hair while the dark colored young one has light brown hair. The place of orgin is Korea.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan  :

It is dominant species in Dong-baeck hill, which can be commonly seen in the forest or around the forest and pastures of the  Different from Quercus Salicina Blame, which has teeth in the edge of the leaf. Its teeth start from moddic part of the edge of the leaf.
