Jeju Gotjawal

Characteristics : It is about 60~140cm in length. This species in Jeju is usually longer than 1m. The body color changes distinctively according to the location. In Northen, color is green and it has a red stripe. It has an olive-colored pattern on its neck, and the black spots on its yellow stomach. Going Southern, you can see its green color being faded. In Jeju, its body is olive-colored and white or olive color pattern is clear around the neck. Its fang is hidden on the back of its mouth.

Ecology : One of snakes in Korea can be found very well. They like the edge of the water. Meeting people, they run away at once, so we don’t have to have some fear. They hibernate in a gap of rock ar a pile of stones. They make a pair from September to October. Then they lay 10~30 eggs on bush or grass in the next year(from June to July). They like a frog, also live on a loach or fish in rice field or pond.

Where you can see this species at Dongbaekdongsan : It is often observed at a pond and around swampy land. Especially around Monmulkak(먼물깍). It is commonly observed in summer.
